The Alumni Affairs team along with Gamma Iota Sigma is proud to announce this year's 3rd Alumni Newsletter. This semester proved to be very successful with our various fund raising activities and the hosting of our Annual Awards for Excellence Luncheon. I hope you enjoy this issue! 4th Annual Date Auction Fundraiser

4th Annual Date Auction Fundraiser

The Sigma Chapter held its final fundraiser of the year with its 4th annual Date Auction, held on Wednesday, April 8th, 2009. This final fundraiser was a great success, as we raised more than $800 to donate to the Children’s Alopecia Project. Sigma Chapter sets a fundraising goal at the beginning of each academic year. For the 2008-2009 academic year, our goal was to raise $3,000 for the Children’s Alopecia Project. After the date auction, our fundraising total for this academic year is over $3,900!

21st Annual Awards for Excellence Luncheon

21st Annual Awards for Excellence Luncheon

The Department of Risk, Healthcare, and Insurance Management held its 21st Annual Awards for Excellence Luncheon on Tuesday, April 7th, 2009. The event, co-sponsored by Gamma Iota Sigma – Sigma Chapter, aims to recognize outstanding performances in academics, teaching, professionalism, and ethics.

Seventh Annual Math Competition

Seventh Annual Math Competition

On Friday, April 24, 2009, the Sigma Chapter hosted its Seventh Annual Math Competition. Forty one students from eight local high schools attended the event. The students take a series of four 20-minute tests, all without a calculator. Problems on the test range from rudimentary algebra to more advanced logarithmic equations.

Day at the Races: Sigma at the Broad Street Run

Day at the Races: Sigma at the Broad Street Run

For the first time ever, Sigma Chapter participated as a group in the annual running of the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia, PA. The race was held on Sunday morning, May 3rd, 2009. The group of runners was composed of Gamma Iota Sigma members, friends of members, and alums of the program.

Philabundance Community Service Event

Philabundance Community Service Event

On Saturday, April 4th, 2009, Sigma Chapter held a community service event in conjunction with Philabundance. Amidst the wind and multitudes of trash bags, our members spent the better part of three hours helping to make Philadelphia a nicer place to live. Over 40 members participated in helping clean up sections of North Philadelphia. Participants met at the Garden Center in the Kensington Section of Philadelphia, where they were split into groups. Each group was assigned different city blocks to clean. Some groups were assigned to parks, others to streets. At the conclusion of the event, participants were treated to a barbecue hosted by a local company.

The Sigma Chapter held its 18th Annual Dinner at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Saturday, April 25th, 2009. In addition to the more than 150 Sigma Chapter members who were in attendance, several special guests were also on hand for the event.

Sigma Chapter Wins First Place at SPO Fair

The Sigma Chapter has won yet again! Sigma Chapter is proud to announce that it took home the first place prize at the Student Professional Organization Fair on Monday, April 20th, 2009. The event, held prior to the Altar Hall Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, featured all of the Student Professional Organizations in the Fox School of Business and Management.

Gives Back to the Philadelphia Community: Children's Alopecia Project

On Wednesday, April 29th, 2009, Gamma Iota Sigma was proud to present Children’s Alopecia Project with a $5,000 check. The amount raised exceeded the initial goal of $3,000 set at the beginning of this past academic year. This donation was an accumulation of several fundraisers, including a World Series ticket raffle, a beef n’ beverage, a date auction, bake sales and weekly 50/50 raffles.
